Going to overnight camp for the first time can feel like a big leap—for campers and for parents. At Berkshire Trails, we understand the mix of excitement and nerves, and we’ve built a support system that helps first timers land comfortably, build confidence, and start making connections from Day One.
To ease the transition, Berkshire Trails hosts a New Camper Get-Together in May. Parents will speak with our leadership team to receive guidance on supporting their child emotionally, what they can expect in this first summer, tips for packing, and a chance to ask questions. The new campers will engage in fun activities and begin meeting peers and staff. In June, we also open our doors for a Pre-Camp Open House, where families can tour camp, meet staff, and imagine the summer ahead.
These pre-camp touchpoints do more than build logistics, they build relationships. Campers arrive at camp seeing familiar faces, and families feel more connected to Berkshire Trails before the summer even begins.
Once camp begins, our approach is intentional. Counselors are chosen not just for their skills but for their empathy, listening ability, and capacity to make every camper feel valued. Bed placement within cabins and icebreaker programming help break down walls quickly.
We know homesickness is real. Our staff are trained to respond compassionately and proactively. From morning and afternoon check-ins to nightly cabin chats, campers are given support every step of the way.
Bunk life is a core part of the Trails experience. Cabins house 6–12 campers with 2–4 counselors, depending on age. They have indoor plumbing (sinks, showers, toilets), electrical outlets, and storage, so comfort isn’t sacrificed. Because counselors live alongside campers, they are close by for guidance, conversation, and connection.
Downtime in the cabins (morning clean-up, rest hour, evenings, etc.), becomes a space for building trust, empathy, and friendship.
Berkshire Trails offers a wealth of activities - from athletics and aquatics to arts & tech, adventure, and performing arts. First-time campers are encouraged to try a range of offerings (often six periods per day plus an evening activity) so they can discover what they love. Having many options increases the likelihood they’ll find a place to shine, connect with peers over shared interests and find their passion.
Our staff are enthusiastic, motivated and skilled who have a passion for camp and enjoy working with kids. They have skills and knowledge that they want to share with campers.

First-time campers at Berkshire Trails don’t just “survive” - they thrive. Our mission is to create an inclusive, nurturing space where every child feels seen, supported, and free to explore. If your family is on the cusp of this milestone, we’d love to talk more, invite you to tour camp, and help your child take the leap into confidence and friendship.
